How an 8-Team Bracket Works
An 8-team single elimination bracket has three rounds and seven total matches. Each loss eliminates one participant until a champion remains.
Seed 1 plays Seed 8, Seed 4 plays Seed 5, Seed 2 plays Seed 7, and Seed 3 plays Seed 6. The 1/8 winner meets the 4/5 winner; the 2/7 winner meets the 3/6 winner. Seed 1 and Seed 2 can only meet in the final.
Fewer than 8 participants
An 8-slot bracket can still run a smaller field. Empty first-round slots become byes, usually for the highest remaining seeds.
